Introduction to the Holy Shrine

The land of Deccan has always been a sacred sanctuary and spiritual abode for revered Sufis and mystics. Among these highly exalted personalities, Hazrat Maulana Moinuddin Shirazi Chishti Nizami, popularly celebrated as “Aab Paash,” holds a position of immense reverence.

His magnificent holy shrine is situated on the serene and picturesque banks of the Godavari River near Paithan, Maharashtra.

Historical Background and Arrival in Deccan

According to historical traditions and the manuscript Hisaar-e-Ghausia, Hazrat Moinuddin belonged to the prestigious Chishtiya Nizamia order. During the reign of Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq, he migrated from Delhi to Paithan under the spiritual command of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya Mahboob-e-Ilahi.

The Origin of the Titles Aab Paash and Naan Paash

During the migration of a large caravan of dervishes and travellers, Hazrat Moinuddin devoted himself to serving water to the thirsty. This noble act earned him the title Aab Paash (The Water Dispenser).

His brother distributed bread to the caravan and became known as Naan Paash (The Bread Distributor).

The Shrine Complex

Hazrat Maulana Moinuddin remained unmarried throughout his life. The shrine complex contains the historic Stone Mosque (Sangeen Masjid), the tomb of Hazrat Qutbuddin, and the graves of close family members.

Patronage During the Asaf Jahi Era

During the reign of the Nizams of Hyderabad, the shrine underwent restoration and received land grants for maintenance and annual Urs expenses.

The Annual Urs

The annual Urs is traditionally observed on the 2nd of Ramadan-ul-Mubarak. Devotees gather for Quran recitation, Zikr, Dua, Naat, Manqabat and Langar.
